Ursine intruder gets tents banned from three campgrounds

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge managers have closed three campgrounds on the Kenai Peninsula to tent camping after an early morning bear encounter on Saturday.

Refuge managers received reports of a black bear damaging a camper’s tent in the Refuge’s Lower Ohmer Campground and scratching the single occupant.

In response, managers temporarily closed Lower Ohmer, Upper Skilak, and Engineer Lake camgrounds to tent camping. Camping in hard-sided recreational vehicles is still permitted and all the campgrounds remain open to day-use.

The closest alternative campgrounds for tent camping are Hidden Lake and Lower Skilak.

The individual in the bear encounter was not identified by the refuge in its statement.
