Snowmachiners rejoice! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is opening the Caribou Hills area within Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to snowmachine use, effective immediately.
Higher elevations in the Caribou Hills have recently received snowfall allowing for the limited opening. No other areas of the Refuge are currently open to snowmachines due to inadequate snow cover.
Refuge Manager Andy Loranger says the preference is to open all designated snowmachining areas on the Refuge concurrently, but that is not possible at this time. He's asking snowmachiners to respect the closure still in effect on the remainder of the refuge.
In addition, the lack of snow and presence of open water at lower elevations, access to the Caribou Hills is limited. Users are advised to use existing parking off of Oil Well Road at the roadhouse, gravel pit trail or the last pad.
