Clean up continues as Swan Lake Fire smolders

Alaska Division of Forestry

Activity on the Swan Lake Fire was limited to smoldering fuels and duff due to the cooler, wetter weather yesterday. Fire managers expect the smoldering to continue for several days with some smoke forecast for Cooper Landing and the Sterling Highway corridor again today.

Meanwhile, fire crews continue to mop-up residual hot spots and repair containment lines. Helicopters are being used to remove large amounts of supplies and equipment. The equipment taken off the line get packaged and taken to Palmer or Fairbanks where the hoses will be washed, dried and rolled, while pumps are serviced, refurbished and available for future needs.

Fireline repair will continue along the Sterling Highway and where contingency lines were put into place but are no longer needed.

Personnel assigned to the 102,000 acre fire has dropped to 234, about half what it was at its peak two weeks ago.
