Draft EIS gets hearing in Nikiski

A public hearing is coming up on Wednesday in Nikiski that is vital to the proposed Alaska LNG project.
The Draft Environmental Impact Statement is ready for review, and Wednesday’s meeting is one of eight being held in Alaska next (this) week.
Public testimony on the draft EIS can be made at the public meeting, online, or via mail.
The Alaska Gasline Development Corporation’s AK-LNG project includes utilizing the Nikiski industrial area for the southern terminus of the pipeline, where a liquefaction plant would cool natural gas to a liquid state for shipment.
Though the project has stalled due to a worldwide glut of natural gas, if re-started, AK-LNG could provide nearly 30,000 construction jobs over eight years and nearly a thousand permanent jobs to follow. About 250 would work in Nikiski, providing a much-improved economic base.
Wednesday’s meeting is from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Nikiski Rec Center.
