Econ 919: The attraction of a new fieldhouse

As we heard on the KDLL morning news, the Soldotna City Council unanimously passed an ordinance last week to put funding for a new field house before city voters. The city will ask voters to approve a $10 million bond for the nearly $12 million project.

One of the co-chairs of the group pushing for the field house is Tim Dillon, the executive director of the Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District. He told me the vision for the field house is larger than just having an indoor place for recreation -- and he says those aspects are what will bring economic growth to the area.

Our number this week is 364. That's how many individual gifts one would receive during the 12 Days of Christmas, which coincidentally, start today. We all know we're getting a partridge in a pear tree on the first day of Christmas, but according to the song, you get another on each of the following 11 days for an even dozen. You also get a dozen drummers drumming once, on the last day -- I suppose to wake you up on Christmas morning.

But there are also 22 pipers piping and 22 turtle doves. 30 lords a-leaping and French hens; 36 ladies dancing and calling birds, 40 maids a-milking and golden rings, and finally, right in the middle, you get 42 swans a-swimming and geese a-laying. Now, depending on how long it takes to hatch a goose egg, this week's number may go up.

According to the Christmas Price Index, which is not something I just made up, all 364 items would cost $157,558. The 12th day alone has a price tag of $34,558.
