Seward flood efforts shift from response to repair

Kenai Peninsula Borough

Flooding in Seward remained manageable over the weekend. Forecasts calling for upwards of four inches of rain never materialized. That allowed crews to stay ahead of the debris washing down from the mountains that has been clogging up shallow streams for more than a week.

A break in the weather late last week allowed heavy equipment operators time to dredge tons of material out of shallow creeks and streams around Seward, allowing rain water a path to drain. The city of Seward extended its disaster declaration Friday.

"Any emergency response or any interaction with FEMA or the state can be consolidated into one event rather than multiple small events. If we get an inch a day, it’s a manageable, but if get a deluge, that material comes off that mountain and impacts the drainage ways and that’s when we have a problem," said interim city manager Jeff Bridges.

While rain remains in the forecast throughout the week, crews are expected to begin working on road repairs Tuesday.
