Smoke increases as Swan Lake hot spots flare up in strong winds

Air quality deteriorated overnight and by Saturday morning was reported to be at hazardous levels in Cooper Landing because of increased smoke from the Swan Lake Fire.
Brentwood Reid, the incident commander on the fire, said it flared up in the Thurman, Mystery, and Dike creek drainages due to a cold weather front moving over the peninsula from the north, which is bringing with it winds as high as 30 mph.
The wind is pushing smoke into Cooper Landing and the Kenai River corridor and the Sterling Highway. Helicopter water-drops are being used the area north of Upper Jean Lake and in the area northwest of Fuller Lakes.
Reid cautions motorists to beware of others on the road distracted by the aerial suppression operations and to drive with headlights on at all times.
The weather forecast calls for some cloudiness on Tuesday, but no rain is predicted for the next 10 days. Winds should diminish by Monday night.
