State mandates limit Easter gatherings

It’s Easter on Sunday. Celebrations are going to look a lot different this year, following mandates for COVID-19. The state of Alaska issued a health alert today regarding religious services and Easter baskets.

Citing a previous health mandate prohibiting gatherings of non-household members, the alert says online streaming of religious services is allowed, as long as those producing the service number 10 or fewer, and practice specific social distancing and masking requirements.

The state is also allowing drive-up services, in which members of households gather near places of worship and participate remotely, while remaining in their vehicles, parked a minimum of 6 feet apart.

The alert also sets guidelines for the assembly and distribution of Easter baskets.

Easter basket-making and distribution gatherings are limited to no more than 10 people, and participants must adhere to social distancing, hand washing and masking requirements. No one who is exhibiting sympoms of COVID-19, who has traveled out of state within the last 14 days or who has been around someone who has tested positive is allowed to participate.

As of noon today there are 213 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Alaskans. That’s up 22 cases from yesterday. There are no new cases confirmed on the Kenai Peninsula today.
