Weekend rain slows Swan Lake Fire growth

Alaska Division of Forestry

The Swan Lake Fire burning north of Sterling and Cooper Landing saw minimal growth over the weekend, and fire managers are estimating only minimal growth for the next two days. The fire is reported at a little over 100,000 acres, with 441 personnel fighting it. It is currently 25 percent contained.

There is a chance that the fire area will receive some light precipitation today, with scattered showers continuing over the mountains on Tuesday. A high pressure system will possibly set up over the Peninsula in the later part of the week.

With wildfire danger moderated in some parts of the state due to cooler, wetter weather, the Alaska Division of Forestry lifted the campfire closure order that was put into effect north of the Alaska Range. However, campfire restrictions will remain in effect for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, Anchorage, the Mat-Su, and the Copper River Valley from Glennallen to Valdez.

Fire managers will continue to monitor conditions daily and adjust campfire closures and area burn permit suspensions as conditions change. Burn permit suspensions prohibiting open debris burning and the use of burn barrels are currently in place in all Division of Forestry protection areas and will be re-evaluated daily.

Over the weekend there were 173 active wildfires burning in Alaska and more than 2,100 firefighting personnel were working to contain them.
