Areas of the Glacier and Seward Ranger Districts in Chugach National Forest are closed to winter motorized use. The closures will remain in effect until Feb. 15 unless otherwise noted.

The Chugach National Forest has opened sections of the Glacier and Seward Ranger Districts for recreational snowmachine use. Snowmachine use is permitted in specified areas until Nov. 30, unless otherwise noted.

The goal of the project is to restore the creek, after historic mining reshaped it and damaged the habitat. An earlier phase was completed in 2007, and the section phase is underway now.

The U.S. Forest Service applied for another 20-year withdrawal of the Russian River watershed, which exempts a 3,000-square-mile area of Chugach National Forest from mining claims. The purpose is to protect fishing and recreation on the river.

U.S. Forest Service staff are planning to burn piles of beetle kill wood, as well as material that could potentially pose a fire risk, in areas of Chugach National Forest.
