Mayor Brian Gabriel

At last night's Kenai City Council meeting, former Mayor Ron Malston was remembered. He passed away late last month at the age of 85. The council voted to place a memorial plaque at Leif Hansen Memorial Park, and plant a tree in his name.

A memorial service was held on Saturday.

The Kenai City Council on Wednesday night passed a $16-point-5 million General Fund budget, which covers the basic operation of the city. Another $14 million is appropriated from the city’s various other funds, such as the airport, senior center and capital project funds for their respective operations.

Kenai's city manager gave the city council a heads up on the budget process at last night's Kenai City Council meeting. Paul Ostrander said it's been taking up a lot of his time.

Kenai Mayor Brian Gabriel and City Manager Paul Ostrander teamed up for what was billed as a state of the city presentation at a meeting of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce Wednesday.

In an effort to put more bite into its municipal ordinances, the City of Kenai is considering court appearances for repeated violators of animal control ordinances.

Introduced on Feb. 6, the ordinance will have a public hearing tomorrow (Wed.) night. If passed it would go into effect in mid March.

Alaska Board of Fisheries

Amid the turmoil of the Alaska Board of Fisheries’ flip-flopping meeting sites, the Kenai City Council came out firmly behind the local representative on the regulatory body.

At its most recent meeting, the council passed with unanimous consent supporting Robert Ruffner for another term on the Fish Board.

The specter of having the City of Kenai’s dock sit idle for the summer was avoided at the last minute during Wednesday night’s Kenai City Council meeting when a one-year lease was approved with CISPRI, the Cook Inlet Spill Prevention and Response, Inc.

The $20,000 contract gives CISPRI non-exclusive use of the dock, the city’s three cranes, office space, the floats, moorings and operating area adjacent to the dock.
