Seward Highway reopened near Hope turnoff

Alaska State Troopers

A five mile stretch of the Seward Highway south of Turnagain Arm was closed for at least two hours Tuesday.

Alaska State Troopers closed the highway out of an abundance of caution, says spokesperson Megan Peters.

“We have a helo going down to do oversight while they’re trying to do a track. ATV’s assisting. Apparently there were multiple other wrecks that were further up and so there’s just a lot going on right now.”

Troopers received the call shortly after 1 p.m. of a vehicle in a ditch and reports of someone possibly hiding in the woods and armed. Authorities responded from Soldotna, Seward and Anchorage. The portion of the highway closed between mileposts 63 and 68 is near the Hope turnoff. Peters says poor cellular reception in that area was making it difficult for responding officers to relay information. The highway was reopened as of 4 p.m., though Peters says intermittent closures were expected while the investigation continues.
