Legacy Art Estate Sale for Cambid Choy

Legacy Art Estate Sale for Cambid Choy

Legacy Art Sale featuring the works of local artist and Professor Cambid Choy. The sale includes original sculptures, sketches, tools and more.

Welcome to the Legacy Art Estate Sale for Cam Choy Cam was born and raised in Hawaii. He received his Bacheor of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame, and attained his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Kentucky. His artistic journey was deeply influenced by his time in Italy as an undergraduate, where he was profoundly inspired by the works of the Renaissance Masters. After freelancing as an artist in Hawaii, he moved to Chicago to pursue his art before becoming a professor of fine art at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. About twelve years ago, he migrated to Soldotna, AK to teach fine art and grow as an artist at Kenai Peninsula College(KPC)–and the rest is history. Prior to his arrival at KPC, the arts courses were primarily painting and photography oriented. During this past decade, the arts at KPC dramatically expanded into the three-dimensional realm. Cam incorporated clay, wax, plaster, metals. Displayed here in this space are a sample of his works. They encompass his creative energy expressed on canvas, paper, wax, plaster, metals and mixed media. A marble, stone and metal sculpture entitled “Baptism,” a memorial to our father, is permanently placed at the University of Notre Dame. He also has a public installation outside Kenai Peninsula Hospital’s ICU: an oversized articulated metal salmon that flows with the wind. He created a piece that hangs outside of KPC’s anthropology lab that was dedicated to his friend in 2022. He has also been commissioned by private benefactors to create marble sculptures. And for the 50th anniversary of KPC, Kenai Peninsula Borough and Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Cam sculpted the wax busts of the founder of KPC, the first chairman of KPB, and the initial superintendent of KPBSD from which the commemorative coin set was minted. He was passionate about his art and strived to instill that passion in his students regardless of their prior experience in fine art. When word of his death spread, messages of support poured in from his students, the local community as well as from across the nation. At his memorial at KPC last year, many of his former students gave testimony of his impact on their lives not only as an instructor but also as a friend. His spirit is evident in his work, each piece reminding us of life’s essentials: energy, passion, compassion and hope. Thank you for attending this gathering where my brother’s works are presented. Any and all sales from today will be donated to medical missionaries in Thailand we have been supporting. Our missionaries are a pediatric plastic surgeon and a pediatrician; a husband-wife team. They provide free medical care to any and all and the surgeon’s specialty is repair of cleft lip and palate. After the close of this Legacy Art Estate Sale, a website will be established where reprints of his drawings may be purchased. Proceeds from the sale of reprints will go toward funding a fine arts scholarship established in my brother’s name. Aloha and God’s blessing be upon you and yours, Cyrus Choy & Paulina Choy
