Kenai Conversation: Avalanche awareness

Snow has been dumping around southcentral. If you’re into skiing, snowboarding or snowmachining, you’ve probably been dreaming about getting out into the mountains to enjoy it.

But with good snow does come avalanche risk. And it is important for recreationists to know what they’re getting into before they head out and up.

Today, we’re talking avalanches. John Sykes is a forecaster with the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center. Nick D’Alessio is a backcountry guide with his company Remarkable Adventures and a co-owner of Alaska Guide Collective. And Sean Sullivan is a snowmachiner in Nikiski who teaches avalanche classes for motorists through the Alaska Avalanche School.
