Hope Community Resources receives $330K for 'neighborhood' in Sterling

Alaska's largest charitable organization announced awards of $6.6 million Monday for a variety of projects around the state. Among the myriad projects funded, the Rasmuson Foundation directed $330,000 to Hope Community Resources for a project in Sterling.

Those funds will be used to help complete what Hope is calling "an intentional neighborhood" on 20 acres just outside Sterling.

According to Hope and Rasmuson documents, five single-family homes and one triplex are currently under construction. The compound will provide not only housing for Hope's clients but, quoting from the award letter, "A way of life that incorporates the desires of families seeking to create a supportive neighborhood."

Construction of the homes is expected in spring 2018 and accommodate up to a dozen residents. There is still space available.

Hope Community Resources already has group homes in Anchorage, Eagle River and Dillingham.

Diane Kaplan, Rasmuson Foundation President and CEO, said the goal of the grants is, "To support projects that will have a lasting impact on the communities they serve."
