Food Bank cooking up 23rd annual soup supper fundraiser

Kenai Peninsula Food Bank

The 23rd annual Kenai Peninsula Food Bank soup supper is coming up this weekend. It's the food bank’s biggest event of the year.

More than a dozen local restaurants will be featured for this year’s soup supper. But the food bank’s Donor Relations Specialist Randi Smith says there’s a lot more to be had than just a good meal.

“We’ll have a Live Auction, silent auction, we’ll be pulling raffle winners for Alaska Airlines tickets and our side-by-side (ATV), so it should be a really exciting evening. It’s an empty bowl project, so everyone gets a lovely handmade bowl with their dinner ticket, and there will be soups, dessert, bread a really good time.”

Executive Director Greg Meyers says the empty bowl each attendee receives is a symbol, meant to raise awareness about food insecurity and local hunger.

“The idea behind all this is to lift up hunger awareness. Last year, just in the diner alone, we served almost 18,000 meals for lunches for people coming in. The food bank, through our efforts here and the wonderful efforts of all of our agencies, 72 of those, turned out almost 565,000 meals throughout the peninsula that were served, thanks to our agencies, our volunteers and all of the generous donors.”

A number of themed gift baskets from local businesses will be up for auction as well.

“It is just incredible,” Meyers says. “We have the most gifted group of people putting these baskets together. They’ve taken all these things donated by all the businesses and then they find all these creative ways to put them together. Within a lot of these baskets, there’s gift certificates to different things; restaurants, services like dog grooming. There’s a whole bunch of other things included as well.”

He says the menu will feature soups friendly for any diet. Single tickets are available online and at the food bank for $50 and full table reservations are available as well. The soup supper is Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center and doors open at 5 p.m.
