Happy noise: Soldotna gets another music series grant

Wednesday nights in Soldotna are going to continue their trend of bigger and better this summer, with an influx of $25,000 to support the Music in the Park series.

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce got word last Friday that they secured another grant from the Levitt Foundation to bring in bands from around Alaska and beyond. This is the second year Soldotna will be one of the 20 communities to be part of the Levitt AMP Music program.

Events and programs director Andy Heuiser says Soldotna fits well with what the grant program likes to fund.

“The Levitt Foundation is all about taking underused spaces and turning them into thriving places where the public can gather. Especially since we’ve already done it once with them, they’re looking to see that community involvement and engagement and I think that we’ve done really well making that happen, and the community has come out and supported it in full force,” Heuiser said.

To make it to the final round of consideration, Soldotna needed enough community support in online voting to make it to the top 25. They were in 14th place when voting closed. After that, it was up to the Levitt Foundation Board of Directors to make the final decisions. The winners were announced Dec. 20. Heuiser said the chamber will move ahead with bookings.

“We have bands already contacting us. We do have some on our list. We definitely are interested in bringing Pamuya back next year and maybe the Burroughs, if they’re available. Those were some of our most well-received nights,” Heuiser said.

There are slots for local bands, as well. Anyone interested in performing can contact the chamber.

The Leavitt AMP Soldotna Music Series will begin in June and run every Wednesday through August at Soldotna Creek Park.
