Love, Inc., coordinating assistance during pandemic
The Kenai Peninsula Borough’s Office of Emergency Management focused on community needs in its twice-weekly community conversation Thursday night.
Love, INC., a faith-based community support organization headquartered on Kalifornsky Beach Road, is serving as the donations and volunteer coordinator during the COVID-19 pandemic. Executive Director Leslie Rohr said they’re at home in that role, even if the needs lately are higher.
“We operate as a clearinghouse on a regular basis and that is, needs come into our ministry and then we do find the appropriate resources to fill those needs, and we just are doing it on a larger scale now,” Rohr said.
Rohr said the agency is getting requests for masks, transportation and food assistance and help with paying utilities and rent. Love, Inc., helps connect those in need with other agencies and resources that can help.
Currently, Rohr said she’s trying to help the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, which is in need of gardening tools to get their high tunnel and open-air garden prepped and planted this season.
The food bank also needs donations of individual-sized, nonperishable food that does not require cooking or elaborate preparation.
“When people are homeless or living in substandard and don’t have the ability to prepare meals and the food bank is not able to have them in for a sit-down meal, it’s imperative that we make sure they have an ample supply of food that they can prepare in whatever their living situation is,” Rohr said.
Anyone who can help with either of those needs can drop off a donation at Love, Inc. or the food bank, which is also on K-Beach Road. To volunteer or make other donations to help those facing difficulties during the pandemic, Love, Inc. can be reached at 262-5140.
