Knopp will still appear on primary ballot
Gary Knopp’s name will still appear on the Aug. 18 primary ballot. The Kenai Republican was among the seven killed in a midair collision early Friday morning just outside Soldotna. Knopp was seeking a third term in the state House, against fellow Republicans Ron Gillam and Kelly Wolf. The winner of the primary will face James Baisden, who registered as non-affiliated, in the general election.
Early voting for the state primary began Monday. According to the Alaska Department of Law, if Knopp wins, the Alaska Republican Party will be able to petition for a replacement candidate in the general election.
The final day to register for an absentee ballot is Saturday. You can apply online on the Alaska Division of Elections website, for both the August primary and November general election. An Alaska driver’s license or state ID is required. Call the Division of Elections for information on absentee voting at (907) 209-6041.
