This is municipal election day on the Kenai Peninsula, and in much of the state's communities. Locally, citizens will elect representatives to city councils, service areas, the school board and borough assembly. There are also initiatives on the ballot for voters to decide.
There are three openings on the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly, representing Districts 3, 4, and 7, Nikiski, Soldotna, and the Central Region, respectively.
Three candidates are seeking the District 3 seat: Joseph Ross, Jesse Bjorkman, and Jonathan Quick.
Two candidates are vying for the District 4 seat: Tyson Cox and Rose Henry, and there are two candidates for District 7: Brent Johnson and Holly Odd.
For the Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board, seats are up in Districts 1, 6, and 9, representing Kalifornsky, the East Peninsula and the South Peninsula, respectively.
The District 1 seat is the only contested seat, with challengers Susan Lockwood and Patricia Truesdell trying to unseat incumbent Dan Castimore. Martha Flemming is running unopposed in Seward and incumbent John Kelly is unopposed out of Homer.
All borough voters will see two measures on the ballot; Prop 1 would adopt a manager form of government, and Prop 2 would increase the maximum amount of sales tax that can be paid in a single transaction from $15 to $30.
In the City of Soldotna, Councilwoman Lisa Parker is running unopposed for reelection to Seat E, while two candidates vie for Seat D: Dave Carey and Pamela Parker.
In the City of Kenai, council members Jim Glendening and Glenese Petty are running unopposed for reelection, as is Mayor Brian Gabriel.
Kenai City voters will also have two propositions before them. Prop A would eliminate the condition that potential candidates submit a nominating petition with the signatures of 20 or more registered city voters. Prop B would move up the date newly elected council members can take office by about a week.
Polls opened at 7 o'clock this morning and will remain so until 8 tonight. KDLL will have results online and on the air as they become available.
