Crime Novelist Dennis Lehane
He's written five novels featuring the working-class Boston private detective team of Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. They include A Drink Before the War, Darkness, Take My Hand, Sacred, Gone Baby Gone and Prayers for Rain. Lehane abandoned the duo for his book about the effect of an abduction on a group of boys. It's a thriller, Mystic River, and it's been made into a new film directed by Clint Eastwood.

At Least 11 Die in Violent Day in Baghdad
A suicide car bombing at an Iraqi police station in Baghdad leaves the bomber and eight Iraqis dead and dozens wounded. In a separate incident, a Spanish embassy employee is killed in Baghdad. Northwest of the Iraqi capital, a U.S. soldier dies in an ambush on his convoy. NPR's Tom Bullock reports.

Quantum Physics Work Nets Nobel
Three scientists win this year's Nobel Prize in physics for their work with superfluids and superconductivity. White House Steps Up Defense of Iraq Plan
The White House goes on the offensive to sell its plan to rebuild Iraq. Poll: America Heading in Wrong Direction
A new poll for NPR shows that among likely voters, a majority believe the country is on the wrong track. Americans also say they are less confident in President Bush's job performance. Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg and Republican pollster Bill McInturff asked people for their views of President Bush, the war in Iraq and the state of the country. NPR's Mara Liasson reports.
