Alaska State Troopers

Feb. 3 update: The offier involved in the shooting was Sgt. Robert Hunter, a 20-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers.

An Alaska State Trooper was involved in a shooting in Kasilof on Wednesday. According to a Department of Public Safety report, troopers in Soldotna received a report of a domestic disturbance possibly involving a gunshot in the area of Coho Loop at around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.

During the investigation, Justin Leman, 32, of Kasilof, fled the scene. Multiple troopers tracked Leman through the woods. He was located, and the report states that at about 8:40 p.m., Leman produced a weapon toward a trooper and was fired upon. He was given medical attention and a LifeMed helicopter was dispatched but he died on the scene.

Leman's next of kin has been notified.

The shooting is being investigated. The trooper involved will not be named until after a mandatory, 72-hour administrative leave.
