A woman and young child were flown to Anchorage for medical care after a car crash on the Sterling Highway yesterday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers said in a dispatch they first received a report of a two-vehicle collision at mile 85.5 on the Sterling Highway near Scout Lake at about 11:20 a.m.
They said a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup was driving northbound when a southbound 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt fish tailed and crossed into the opposite lane, according to investigation and witness statements. The Tacoma driver tried to veer right to avoid the car, troopers said, but hit the Chevrolet on the passenger side. Troopers said the roads were icy at the time.
A caller told troopers the Chevrolet driver and two young children, both in car seats, were trapped in the car. Once Central Emergency Services and troopers arrived on the scene, they were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital. The driver and one of the children were later flown to Anchorage for further care, according to troopers.
The Tacoma driver was also transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for minor injuries.
Troopers said the investigation is ongoing.
