The state Department of Natural Resources wrote the company a stern letter last month, giving BlueCrest 30 days to prove it could fund more development, or risk losing access to the unit.

Southcentral Alaska is facing a natural gas shortage. Demand from the state’s most populated region could outpace supply as soon as this winter.

It’s been over two weeks since a pilot first reported seeing a mileslong oil sheen while flying over the area. Responders still haven’t determined the cause of the initial sheen.

The onsite joint command says it’s gone several days without seeing any sheen in the area.

State officials say they still cannot trace the sheen to the nearby oil platform.

The news is the latest development in the region’s race to stave off a looming shortfall of Cook Inlet natural gas.

Sale results show little interest in the more than 3 million acres of state-owned land in Cook Inlet opened for bids.

The United Cook Inlet Drift Association and the Cook Inlet Fishermen's Fund filed suit Wednesday.

Cook Inletkeeper's annual Mouth 2 Mouth Wild Run and Ride will be held this Monday. The ten mile race is open to runners and fat tire cyclists.

The ruling will move management of the Cook Inlet Exclusive Economic Zone to the federal government, and create new rules for commercial gillnetters who fish in the area.
