In recent years, the school’s enrollment has plummeted. The school’s built for 175 students. But next year, the district forecasts only 19 will enroll. And as school district officials consider what to cut, Nikolaevsk’s school remains a top candidate.

During a six-hour deliberation, board members praised the effort of the charter group, but retained concerns about budget, curriculum and technical issues in the application. The board ultimately rejected the charter in a 5-4 vote.

A group of parents in Nikolaevsk are taking their charter school application to the district for a second time.
