Heavy snow slowing traffic between Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage

Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities

Heavy winter weather continues to pound portions of the Kenai Peninsula, especially in the mountain passes heading toward Turnagain Arm.

The state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities issued numerous notifications Wednesday alerting drivers of the blizzard-like conditions between the Hope turnoff and Ingraham Creek. Kenai resident Jamie Nelson is a frequent traveler between Kenai and Anchorage and safely made the trip Wednesday afternoon.

“It is really hairy. I’ve been through there in rough conditions quite a few times, but this is one where if you get into trouble, there’s almost nowhere to pull off because there’s 8-12 inches of plowed snow on either side of your car. It’s really deep, it’s really tough to see. I passed one accident where I don’t think anyone collided with each other, but somebody went into the ditch and it caused the three cars behind them to spin out and go into the ditch, so there are four cars in one ditch area. It’s hard to see and it’s very slick when you do try to react. This was definitely in the top three. It was remarkable.”

More snow is expected through the region, especially north of Cooper Landing, with up to six more inches anticipated in the Whittier and Portage areas.
