The borough has extended the emergency declaration through Oct. 24.

Most of Southcentral Alaska was under a flood watch on Friday and Saturday. The Kenai didn't see many impacts, but the borough is monitoring flood-prone areas, and there was flooding on East End Road in Homer.

The meeting was organized by Dave Yragui, who has been speaking out about flooding for more than a decade. Borough officials encouraged residents to work with the borough, and talked about the work it's done so far in the area.

At its meeting Tuesday, the borough assembly approved $175,000 for a study of the flooding and drainage issues in the northwest Kalifornsky Beach area.

The neighborhood is essentially dammed by Kalifornsky Beach Road, which keeps water from draining into Cook Inlet.

Flooding in the Kalifornsky area has troubled residents for years. This year has been particularly bad because of heavy rain and snowfall, and the residents and Borough Mayor Peter Micciche say it’s time to do something about it.

A $230,000 grant from the Bureau of Indian Affairs will allow the tribe to explore options for securing the graveyard, which is located close to the eroding bluff.
