The U.S. Senate is on recess this month and Senator Lisa Murkowski has been making the rounds across the state, including stops on the Kenai. Last week, she was in Soldotna to speak with the Alaska Municipal League.

Senator Lisa Murkowski was in Soldotna Wednesday to speak at the Alaska Municipal League conference. Addressing borough and city leaders from around the state, she touched on a wide range of issues, from cannabis to infrastructure to the ongoing trade war with China.

 


 

  

The Kenai Peninsula Borough can start expecting sales tax receipts from one of the world’s most popular online retailers. A Supreme Court decision last year paved the way for municipalities to begin collecting sales tax from online retailers such as Amazon. The borough’s finance director, Brandi Harbaugh, says like all sales tax collectors, Amazon will be reporting on a quarterly basis.

 

Alaska’s ongoing budget struggles don’t appear to have any quick or easy solutions. Those problems continue to trickle down to cities and boroughs, which are picking up a bigger share of operating costs every year. But the Alaska Municipal League is trying to give local governments a new source of revenue.
